Students risk safety to cut parking costs

Students risk safety to cut parking costs Author: By EMMA SHAW Date: 25/02/2009 Publication: Illawarra Mercury

AS parking fees at the University of Wollongong rise, there are fears students could be putting their safety at risk by returning late at night to cars parked away from designated areas.

The concerns come following two alleged indecent assaults in the university area last week. Police are investigating the reports.

Parking fees were increased this month - the first time in five years - as part of the university's bid to boost the use of public transport; other measures include the introduction of a free shuttle bus between the campus and North Wollongong railway station and free parking for cars with three or more occupants.

However, Patricia Bohackyj, who is studying a Graduate Diploma in Education, said she was concerned students were putting themselves at risk by not parking on site.

"Rather than pay the money, people will risk parking their car outside the university area," Mrs Bohackyj said.

"I think it makes it difficult, particularly for women. I paid $700 in parking fees last year but I won't take the risk of walking."

Reserved parking has increased to $800 a year, with some university pay and display car parks charging $8 for six hours' parking.

The university's project manager for transport, Tom Hunt, said the university was encouraging people to travel by sustainable transport means and worked hard to ensure safety measures were in place.

"We do provide security guards who, on call, will accompany people to their cars," he said. Wollongong Police acting crime manager Steve Davies said there had been no increase in crime in the area and he hoped the two reported attacks were isolated incidents.

The alleged attacks took place on February 17 between 8.30pm and 9pm, on the University Ave bridge and the cycle track near TAFE.

Anyone with information on the attacks can contact Wollongong police on 4226 7899.
