Different angle on parking Author: GR Date: 30/11/2005 Publication: Newcastle Herald
NEW parking and traffic conditions to be introduced in Newcastle's CBD will create an extra 44 parking spaces for inner-city workers and shoppers.
Calls by independent Cr Aaron Buman this year to improve city centre parking prompted Newcastle City Council officers to investigate angle parking, reduced speed limits and new one-way traffic restrictions in some streets.
Councillors voted 9-1 last night to approve changes that include angled parking along Hunter Street between Pacific and Bolton streets and angle parking on the eastern side of Newcomen Street between Scott and Hunter streets.
Bolton Street between Scott and King streets will be turned into a one-way, north-south street, with angle parking on the western side.
Traffic throughout the eastern CBD precinct bounded by Scott, Pacific, King and Newcomen streets will be limited to 40 kmh.
No date has been set for the introduction of the changes.
