Meters to take over 350 spaces Author: By JASON GORDON Civic Reporter Date: 08/06/2007 Publication: Newcastle Herald
THE installation of parking meters at The Hill will begin next month, meaning city workers will need to venture a kilometre from Newcastle's central business district to find a free, unrestricted parking space.
Newcastle City Council has ordered 36 new pay and display parking machines, which are expected to arrive in several weeks' time. The council plans to begin the installation immediately in an area bordered by Wolfe, Watt and Ordnance streets and Reserve Road.
The area has been one of the last bastions for city workers trying to avoid the costly parking meters close to the CBD.
About 350 parking spaces will be affected by the move, including those near Newcastle police station in Watt Street and along Newcomen Street near Newcastle Grammar School.
Most of the spaces will be in one- and two-hour parking zones at $1.70 an hour, a small portion will allow for all-day parking at 40 cents an hour.
One hundred and fifty-nine spaces will be free and unrestricted parking.
