THE retail boom at Rutherford Shopping Centre could result in major parking and traffic issues unless business and Maitland City Council get it right, councillor Tony Keating said.
He said four major retailers and supporting specialty shops would trade from a concentrated and potentially congested site.
Developers of supermarkets were required to provide one parking space per 16 square metres of floor space, Cr Keating said.
Unless developers provide more spaces than required, parking problems would be experienced.
He said developers should be urged to provide more parking and provide for an ageing population.
