Adelaide's Lord Mayor has outlined proposed on-street parking fee rises in the city's 2023/24 draft budget, with hourly rates rising by 10 to 30 cents depending on location.

Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith has set out the City of Adelaide's proposed parking fee changes in its 2023/24 draft budget, in a column published by InDaily as the council sought community feedback.

Under the proposal, on-street hourly rates would rise from $2.10 to $2.20, or from $2.80 to $3.10 in some spots. The column also pointed to uneven weekend pricing: on Saturday mornings, street parking tops out at $5 across parts of the city, while some spaces cost just $2.60 for three hours.

The Lord Mayor noted the city has more than 38,000 parking spaces on and off street. About 10,000 on-street spaces are free and 2,800 are paid, while the council's U-Park operation runs around 6,000 of the city's 19,000 off-street spaces across 10 sites offering early bird and flat-rate deals. She argued that regular turnover of street parks matters for city businesses, writing that "turnover is essential".

Community consultation on the proposals was open until 18 June.

For regular city commuters, even small rises in street and council car park fees change the sums on a longer-term alternative, so comparing a monthly car space lease against daily parking costs is worthwhile.
