Parkopedia's 2022 Global Parking Index ranks Australia as the most expensive country for short and daily off-street parking, with Sydney second only to New York.

Australia remains the most expensive country in the world for off-street parking, according to Parkopedia's 2022 Global Parking Index, released in November 2022. The index draws on pricing for more than 90 million parking spaces across 20,000 cities in 90 countries, with prices converted to US dollars.

Australia's average price for two hours in an off-street car park was US$19.12, and a full day averaged US$34.42, both the highest of any country.

Sydney was the standout city. Its average daily off-street price of US$51.15 ranked second in the world behind New York, and it was also second for two-hour off-street parking at US$32.65. Melbourne (US$39.70) and Brisbane (US$38.73) also made the global top 10 for daily off-street parking, while Brisbane and Melbourne ranked third and fourth for two-hour stays.

The report found Australian two-hour off-street prices had risen by an average of 2.55 per cent in local currency terms since the previous index in 2019.

With commercial car park rates this high, a monthly lease on a private car space in or near the CBD can be a meaningful saving for regular drivers, and gives owners of spare spaces a clear benchmark when setting a price.
