NEWCASTLE City Council has bowed to public pressure and opened its inner-city parking stations for free weekend parking.
The Herald reported last week that mall businesses had named paid parking as one of the biggest issues affecting weekend trade.
Cr Cassandra Arnold (Greens) moved last night to maintain metered on-street parking throughout the CBD, but open the multi-level parking stations on King and Bolton streets for free parking on Saturdays, Sundays and some public holidays.
Monday to Friday "early bird" rates in council parking stations will only be offered for cars that arrive before 9.30am and stay for more than seven hours.
