The Hobart City Council has deferred controversial new parking charges.
Aldermen last night voted to seek more information and consultation on a range of increases proposed for the CBD.
An officer's report had proposed keeping the 'first hour free', but increasing hourly charges for the main multi-storey car parks.
Voucher and meter parking close to the CBD was also going to rise, but retailers had complained, fearing it would keep shoppers away.
