AHM staff working in their new headquarters could face a health and fitness regime - if their future transport options are anything to go by.

With plans for their multimillion-dollar Wollongong development in the pipeline, ahm management have had to justify not meeting the council's obligations for the provision of car parking in the building.

Although 131 spaces will go into the new eight-storey building, that is 36 per cent short of what is mandated according to the development's "gross floor area", and 28 per cent short according to its "nett lettable area".

The solution? A "green staff travel plan".

Under the plan, 28 parking spots for bicycles will be provided in the building - which could accommodate as many as 6 per cent of the projected 450 staff members.

A lengthy consultant's report was submitted with the development application that called on Wollongong City Council to approve the fewer-than-required car spaces on the grounds of environmental protection.

Key points to the staff travel management plan include giving "car poolers" priority parking, placing a bus timetable in the lobby and installing a telephone near the entrance to call a taxi.
