Illawarra Mercury Parking cheats caught By MEGAN LEVY November 21, 2005

WOLLONGONG motorists are flouting disabled parking regulations and cheating disabled drivers out of their parking spots.

The number of drivers fined for the offence in Wollongong has jumped 33 per cent in the past year.

The hike comes despite the introduction of stiffer penalties in September 2003, when the fine rose from $150 to $375.

Wollongong City Council parking figures reveal 113 people have been fined for illegally parking in disabled zones this year - equating to $42,375 in fines.

This is up from 85 fines last year, with the peak Christmas shopping rush still to come.
