Penny drops on true cost of parking dispute By Martin Boulton August 5, 2005 - 12:53PM The AGE

Motorists might have been smiling when Melbourne's parking officers refused to issue parking fines in the city two months ago, but a new report shows the work bans left a $600,000 hole in the council's revenue.

Melbourne City Council's last quarterly report for 2004-05 shows parking fines dropped in June when officers imposed bans over a rostering dispute.

Municipal Employees Union branch secretary Daryl Cochrane told The Age that the work bans ran for a week to 10 days, but said the matter was now close to being resolved.

"Its been an ongoing problem . . . there was a bit of free parking going on for a while in the city (and) that certainly would have effected the council's revenue," Mr Cochrane said.

Cr Brian Shanahan said there could be a "significant" impact on the council's budget if the downturn in parking fines continued. "Obviously we're hoping the (industrial relations) problem can be overcome," he said.
